George Mason Rugby Head Coach

During my time as a full-time student, I wanted to continue working around the sport I love, and I joined the coaching team at Mason. After one season as assistant coach, I was promoted to the position of head coach of the George Mason Men’s Rugby Team.

My responsibilities as a head coach were diverse and numerous. Outside of the normal duties such as planning practices and making player selections, I was responsible for managing the team’s budget, coordinating travel, and maintaining relationships with George Mason athletics staff.

My role as head coach has helped me develop my interpersonal communication skills and time management. Examples include: knowing how different players need to be spoken to, understanding what motivates different players, and maintaining positive relationships while also providing sometimes negative feedback.

Cintas Service and Sales Representitive

After my time as an athlete, I returned home to Alexandria, VA, and found a job with Cintas. My time with Cintas was brief (Approx 8 months), and eased my transition from sports into the professional world. While I was with Cintas, I pursued a more sales-oriented role, but was incapable of moving out of a service role and into a sales role without a college degree. This roadblock was a key motivator for my departure from Cintas and my enrollment at George Mason to complete my undergraduate degree.

The connections I made at Cintas are ones I value deeply. It takes a certain type of person to work 10-hour days (often from 5 am - 3:30 pm) while driving a box truck, and loading and unloading supplies often weighing between 30 and 80 lbs. My role as a service and sales representative taught me the balance of working physically hard while having the competence and patience to talk to and sell to my customers.

Athelete American Raptors

My time as a full-time rugby player was fundamental to how I look at life. Playing the sport I love every day in a competitive environment taught me the importance of working hard and having accountability, while also balancing a positive and fun mental state.

For those who have not held a similar role, it is hard to understand the job of doing what you love, while also competing with your friends for spots on gameday. I was thankful every day for the opportunity to be around friends with similar goals, while also actively trying to showcase my own talent and progress to the coaching staff. My role as an athlete helped to teach me the importance of working hard and controlling only what you can control, and not frustrating yourself with the opinions of others, and not blaming others for your own mistakes.
